Arie has contributed to the Planning Complex Cities studio not just as a mentor but also as a key advisor on methodology over recent years. Drawing on his long experience as a researcher in the field of human geography, he has helped to shape the research design of many students. Currently he pursues a special interest in inferential statistics; together with a graduation student, he will publish a chapter on regression analysis in the upcoming book “Learning, teaching and researching Spatial Planning & Strategy”
Arie holds a PhD in urban geography of the Global South but over the last 20 years he has worked on urban geography, planning and design in the Global North predominately. As a mentor Arie is interested in graduation projects about socio-spatial inequality, creative and cultural industries and tourism in urban settings. He is also keen to support students’ emerging academic profiles: he always assesses if graduation work is suitable to be elaborated into a journal paper. See for example a chapter in the recent book ‘Creative Cluster Development Governance, Place-Making and Entrepreneurship’ edited by Komorowski & Picone (2020) together with Planning Complex Cities alumnus Pieternella Aten. More publications that are co-authored by Arie and alumni (not only Planning Complex Cities ) are upcoming!
